The South Australian surveying industry welcomes the news of recent calls to make studying mathematics and science subjects mandatory at school up until Year 12 as reported in The Advertiser on 18 June 2013.
The number of Year 12 students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects has been falling for years and this is a key issue for the surveying industry throughout Australia.
Due to the lack of popularity in these subjects, the number of students enrolling in tertiary courses which lead to Surveying has fallen which has had a dramatic effect on the industry. Further, the average age of South Australia’s surveyors is now above 50 and as those surveyors move into their retirement age, Australia faces a shortage of skilled workers in the Surveying and Spatial Science industries.
